ASHE North-Central NJ Section and ASCE North Jersey Branch Present: Missing Moves: Making Connections to Alleviate Congestion

ASHE North-Central NJ Section and ASCE North Jersey Branch Present:

Missing Moves: Making Connections to Alleviate Congestion

Thursday, January 9, 2025

at the Sheraton Parsippany Hotel

Presented by:

Kirt Ladwa, PE

Senior Associate and Deputy Department Manager at Dewberry

The NJDOT’s evaluation of the Route 295/42/I-76 Interchange identified several operational deficiencies, including the lack of direct connection between Routes 295 and 42. As a result, motorists wanting to make these movements had to travel into the interchange and utilize the local roadway network, increasing congestion on what is already one of the largest and most congested roadways in southern NJ.  The $180 million Route 295/42, Missing Moves, Bellmawr Project eliminated this deficiency by constructing ramps linking Route 295 with Route 42, enhancing traffic flow within the adjacent Interchange, improving safety, and alleviating traffic congestion on the local roads. The presentation will highlight the contribution of multiple technical disciplines which addressed the challenges encountered in the design and construction of two new ramps, each exceeding a half-mile in length, within an urban and environmentally constrained site.

Presentation Title

Delivering the Hudson Tunnel Project:

An Update on Hudson River Ground Stabilization and Construction in New York and New Jersey

Summary

In this presentation, Gateway Development Commission (GDC) Chief Technical Officer Hamed Nejad will provide the latest technical updates on the Hudson Tunnel Project (HTP), the largest and most urgent rail infrastructure project in America. Early work launched on the HTP in November 2023 and is rapidly advancing, with heavy construction well under way on the Hudson River Ground Stabilization (HRGS) Project. Mr. Nejad will discuss geotechnical aspects of the ground modification work to prepare the riverbed for tunnel boring and share recent developments on the HTP’s other active and upcoming construction projects, including the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing – Section 3 (HYCC-3) in Manhattan, the Tonnelle Avenue Bridge Project in North Bergen, and the Palisades Tunnel Project – the HTP’s first tunnel boring contract. Attendees will gain insight into the challenges associated with delivering a major infrastructure project in a dense urban setting, how GDC is managing and anticipating risk, and the engineering methods in use on this generational investment in our region.

ASCE NJB Construction Technical Group Presents: Conrail Point-No-Point Project

Speaker: David Leymeister, PE - Jacobs

Date: Wednesday, June 26, 2024

Time: Virtual Presentation 12pm-1pm; Site Visit 2pm-3pm

Conrail Point-No-Point Project is 60% complete with both sides of the Bascule span completed with 1 major bridge to be completed over PATH. The original swing bridge was built between 1889 -1901 by New York Bay Railroad and was operated by steam power from coal. The structure features five deck-plate girder approach spans and one camelback Howe through-truss swing span on a center bearing. The NYBRR was conceived and constructed as part of the PRR’s wider terminal improvements program in conjunction with the company’s entry into the Port of New York, the nation’s undisputed commercial hub at the turn of the twentieth century.

The project is being replaced by a bascule span on a new alignment in a very congestion area between NJTA, PATH and CSX Intermodal yard on a limited ROW.

Over 20 freight trains used this corridor critical to the Newark Ports. This is the largest under taken by Conrail Shared Assets.

All individuals attending must bring PPE (Safety Boots, Hard Hat, Safety Vest, Eye protection). A job briefing will be held promptly starting at start of the tour. Individuals not having the correct PPE will not be able to attend the tour and will be required to immediately leave the jobsite.

You must register for this event. No walk-ins permitted. Site tour is limited to the first 30 people to register.

Presentation will be from 12pm to 1pm.

Anyone going on the site tour will meet at 2pm. Location to be provided upon registration.

TTG - Route 495, Route 1&9/Paterson Plank Road Bridge

Route 495, Route 1&9/Paterson Plank Road Bridge

The Route 495, Route 1&9/Paterson Plank Road Bridge Rehabilitation Project provided for the complete rehabilitation of the mainline structure and two ramp structures and associated approach roadway improvements. Route 495 passes through one of the most densely populated regions in the United States, is the only vehicular access corridor to midtown Manhattan and has an average daily traffic (ADT) of over 150,000 vehicles. It also serves over 1,800 buses daily which travel in the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) Exclusive Bus Lane (XBL) during the weekday morning peak periods from 6 to 10 AM. The XBL moves approximately 65,000 commuters into Manhattan each day of operation and is recognized as one of the most effective transit systems in the Nation. The mainline structure consists of nine spans that carry eight lanes of Route 495 traffic over US-1&9, Liberty Avenue, Paterson Plank Road, Conrail & NYS&W rail lines, and the New Jersey Transit North Bergen Park and Ride Lot.

The presentation will provide information on many of the complexities of completely rehabilitating a complex structure within one of the most densely populated areas of the country and within one of the most congested corridors in the state.

UESI - Subsurface Utility Engineering - VIRTUAL

Unknown existing underground utilities can have a significant negative impact and create risk on improvement projects during construction. Schedule delays and cost overruns can occur, resulting in time lost waiting for utility companies to relocate their facilities, design changes during construction, and contractor claims and change orders. ASCE 38 was published in 2002 to attempt to resolve these issues, and was updated in 2022 as the Standard Guideline for Investigating and Documenting Existing Utilities. Find out what has changed and how this document can be used effectively on engineering design projects to mitigate those risks. Also, ASCE 75-22 Standard Guideline for Recording and Exchanging Utility Infrastructure Data has been published and is now available. The purpose of ASCE 75-22 is to specify essential attributes for recording and exchanging utility data including type, location, size, orientation, function, ownership, etc. with a focus on newly installed utilities.

"Resilient Infrastructure"

ASCE North Jersey Branch’s Water Resources and Environmental Technical Group (WETG) Presents:

“Resilient Infrastructure” - a live Webinar on December 7th from 12:00 - 1:00 pm

Presented by Trygve Hoff, PE - American Concrete Pipe Association

Resiliency is the new Green. Buzzwords are often overused and underutilized, and Resilient Infrastructure frequently falls in that category. Yet in today’s constantly changing climate, engineers must consider the resiliency of their projects to withstand floods, fires, and earthquakes. Precast concrete products are the definition of resilient: absorbing an impact and continuing to provide service with little or no repair necessary.

  • $20 for ASCE Members and Government Employees

  • $25 for Nonmembers

  • Free for Students (must use .edu email address when registering)
